The Cork Board Story

Cork Board is the eco friendly end product of the Cork Oak tree. This remarkable tree is found only in seven countries on the Mediterranean coast. They are Spain, Portugal, France, Italy, Tunisia, Morocco and Algeria. The most famous product of this cork oak tree (Quercus Suber) is the cork wine stopper. The bark of the tree is harvested, seasoned, boiled, washed and left out in the open. After further treatment the best cork sheets are used for making wine stoppers and the remainder and the lower grade cork is used for making corkboards.

The Cork Oak Tree was revered by the Greeks and only priests were permitted to cut down the tree. It was well known in Egypt and China. Cork stoppers have been used as far back as 3000 BC. Archaeological excavations and recoveries from ancient sunken ships have revealed wine amphorae, plugged with cork, which were as old as 2200 years. In modern times the use of cork for wine bottles was started by a Monk in a Benedictine Monastery. His name was Dom Perignon and he was the cellar keeper of the Abbey. He did not like the wooden stoppers covered with hemp which were in use then. So he turned to cork. That was the beginning of the great cork wine stopper story. It sells in millions today both in quantity and value.

In the nineteenth century the cork stopper began to be recycled into corkboard sheets and tiles. These have excellent sound and shock absorbing properties. Corkboards were used successfully as framed bulletin boards. The cork board also has excellent insulating properties. Today Cork board sheets are used for flooring and wall covering in offices, schools, colleges and hospitals.
